COALMINES CLOSE.

NO SHIPS AVAILABLE. ACCUMULATION OF STOCKS. POSITION ON WEST COAST. TBT TELEGRAPH, —OWN CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. A number of coalmines on the West Coast closed down to-day. Work ceased because, owing to the shipping strike, they were unable to ship stocks of coal away. The accumulation of stocks is very large. All the mines have closed in the Westport district. These include the "Westport and Westport-Stockton mines. The miners have not worked full time in the past few months, and the action now taken by the owners will be decidedly unwelcome. The cutting-off of coal supplies from the West Coast is not considered by men in the industry as likely to lead to any scarcity for the time being in the consuming districts. There arc good stocks in Christchurch. Moreover, it is stated stocks of bunker coal in the chief ports are large and hulks are well filled.
