BOROUGH COUNCILS..

NEWMARKET. The Newmarket Borough Council met last evening. There were present: The Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldson, Messrs. P. S. Boone, H. J. Cooper, N. Kelleway. A. Kent, F. J. O'Meara, W. Sawbridge, G. E. Smerdon, A. R. Seccombe, and T. J. Watts. It was agreed that a special resolution in regard to street, hoardings and other methods of advertising, and licenses in regard thereto, should be submitted for confirmation at a special council meeting on December 18.

A letter from Mr. W. P. Massey to Mr. Clutha Mackenzie, M.P., in regard to proposed loans of £12,500 and £2000. for the erection of municipal buildinits and relief work for" the unemployed, was read. It stated that consent to the loans had been obtained, and that Mr. Massey would ajrree to the payment of interest at 6 per cent. NORTHCOTE. The Narthcote Borough Council met en Tuesday evening. There were present the Mayor, Mr. W„ E. Richardson, Messrs. J. B. Tonar.W. H. Barnes. W. C. Smith. F. 0. Devlin, A. Pnrrieh, O. B. Brinsden. and A. Hurley. It was resolved to apply to the Minister for Finance for authority to, borrow £26.500 for drainage, at a rate of interest not exceeding 6 per cent, per annum, repayable in 86§ years. The rate to cover this in the special drainage area was fixed at 2s Old in the £. A similar course was adopted in connection with £5000-for assistance for connections, the rate beinj 4d in the £, which however, it may not be necessary to collect A rate of 23 d in the £ was also struck over the whole borough for the £3250 loan for water supply additions.
