"ORPHANS' DAY" PICNIC.
HOLIDAY IN THE SCHOOLS.
A holiday will be granted to Auckland city and suburban schools on December 20, so that those pupils entitled to do so will be able to attend the commercial travellers' "Orphans' Day" picnic. This decision was reached by the Education Board yesterday after a long discussioa which aroso as the result of representations made by Mr. D. W. McLean, past president, and Mr. hC. S. Hamlin, who waited on the board as a deputation from the Commercial Travellers' Association. Mr. McLean stated tha.t arrangements for the use oi the Town Hall and for a ferry boatiexcursion on December 20 had been made a year ago; the. schools would not close until December 21, and many of the orphans would rather mis*, the. picnic than lose their attendance marks for the day. Setween 400 and 500 children would b* fected, and it would be a very great pity for them to lose the day's enjoyment.
