WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED
GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE. SUBSIDISING LOCAL BODIES. AVOIDANCE OF WASTE. [BT TELEGRAPH.—rHESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHTJECH. Saturday. "The Government is sympathetic about/ finding work for the unemployed. It has proved that it is doing its best by finding £200,000. W« ha,ve that sum in sight." Thus did the Primo Minister reply to a deputation from various local bodies, including tho Christchurch City Council, that waited upon him to-day regarding unemployment. Mr. Massey promised to do all he could in tho matter. The Government did want to help local bodies who were prepared to Bclp themselves. Figures showed that last winter a proportion of the,,money set aside for this purpose- had been wasted. Instead of subsidising a local body and telling it to do what it 'liked with the money tho Government would subsidise some particular work desired by tho local body, such work first to be submitted foi tho Government' 3 approval. Tho matter would thon bo taken into consideration and something tangible would be loft for tho taxpayer.
