FALSE PRETENCES ALLEGED. TROUBLE OVER CHEQUES. Seven charges of having obtained goods . by false pretences and one of having obtained credit by fraud were preferred against Albert Charles Lamb (Mr. Singer), aged 33, in the Police Court yesterday. Four of the charges were heard before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., and three before Messrs. A* J. Stratford and J. ■ Ziman, J.P.'s. The total value of the j goods, which were principally clothing, was £105 6s. Evidence was given that accused traded tinder the name of A. C. Wilson. To one person who supplied him with goods ho had represented that he had a business at Taumarunui Several witnesses from whom accused bad obtained goods stalled that the cheques they received had been returned from the bank marked not sufficient funds. Evidence was . given that t accused [ did not have a business at Tauinarunui, but that he had a banking account there. Accused had -, . been told by one person to whom he had ';• given a ' cheque that it had been dishonoured by the bank. He had issued other cheques subsequently. Detective Meiklejohn stated that when questioned about cheques he had issued, accused said it had not been brought to his notice that a certain cheque was valueless. He could not keep account of his balance at the bank and was frequently telegraphing amounts to his credit.
