QUESTION OF PRECEDENCE.
ELECTRICITY OR RAILWAYS. QUERY TO LEAGUE MEMBERS. Steps are being taken by the president of the Auckland Railways and Development League, Mr. P. E. Cheal, to obtain the views of members as to what the future policy of the league should be in view of the demand for the development of hydro-electric power at a time when so much is involved in the matter of railway construction. In a circular to delegates to the council he has asked for a vote as to whether they regard the construction of main railway lines or the development of hydro-electric power the more important. In the circular Mr. Cheal personally advocates the construction of main railways in the interests of increased production and settlement as of prior importance to hydro development while at the same time being alive to the advantages of electricity for economic production and transport. He points out that it would take six years to build the Arapuni dam, and that only one large public undertaking could be carried on at the same time. He emphasises the importance to the Dominion of railway lines which will pay, and states that through traffic on long distance lines is the most payable.
