GUM SLUICING PLANT.

An explanation in regard to a sentence in the telegram concerning the official opening of the Parenga Kauri Oils' sluicing plant has been made by Mr. A. W. of th e company. It was stated in the telegraphed message that " the yield of gum should be easilv four tons per shift of eight hours." Mr Gillies states that the result of the trial run of the plant was quite successful, but that it was not yet possible to make any reliable estimate of the quantity of gum that would be secured in each shift, as thi3 would depend upon the richness of the ground which had not yet been tested. Until this test had been made, he said, no estimate of any value could be arrived at. " The machinery," Mr Gillies added, " ran quite up to expectations, but no measurement of the gum produced was made, and it is not fair to make any estimate until an actual measurement has taken place."
