SIR J. CAMPBELL'S BUILDINGS
A section of land at the corner of Shortland and O'Connell Streets, with a frontage of 45ft. to the first-named and of 105 ft. to the last-named street, has been purchased by the Yorkshire Insurance Company. The purchase price is about £23,000, which represents over £500 a foot of the Shortland Street frontage. The purchasers intend to erect a seven-storied building on the site. The buildings now standing on the section include those formerly occupied by Messrs. Brown and Campbell, and they are among the oldest structures in Auckland. The late Sir John Logan Campbell had his office in this block until a short period before his death. The rebuilding scheme will be preceded bv the widening of O'Connell Street, now onfy 19ft. wide, to 33ft. This work wiil also involve the removal of the fourstorey scoria store in O'Connell Street erected in Auckland's early days by the late Sir John Logan Campbe.l.
