MUSICAL COMPETITIONS.
It is some time since musical competitions were held in Auckland, and those which were commenced at His Majesty's Theatre on Saturday evening attracted a very fair attendance. There was a large number of competitors, especially in the singing classes, and some of the performers showed considerable talent. The audience indulged in a good deal of "barrack," and one or two of the performers had missiles thrown at them. Certain persons in the audience persisted in making unjustified comments, and one performer was forced to retire without giving his item because of the ribald laughter and a quantity of rotten fruit which followed his appearance. The public are to be the judges of the competitions, the finals of which will be decided this evening. The following remain in the various classes— Songs: Boys, under 15, Herbert Crook, Stanley Madden, Arnoki Simpson, O. Smith. Girls, under 15, Hazel Johnson, F. Leßoy, M. Burtenshaw. Ladies, Misses Ida Norberg, Ivy Cole, M. Stanisell. Men: Messrs. W. Rainbow, W. J. McPhail, T. Long. . Song, " Bubbles," children, R. Purdoe, F. Lavis, T. Soffe, M. Page, i±. Johnson. Comic songs in costume: Men Messrs. W. Clubb and R. Rowlinson. Comic recitations : Men, Messrs. M., Puha and G. C. ToUerton. Recitations: Girls L. Kelly, T. Davidson, Eva Chapman. Dancing ; Girls, 'F. Roy, M. Ludecke, T. Morgan. Other classes to be decided'tonight win be men's dramatic item and ladies' humorous item, also an open competition lor the song, "Tve Lest My Heart in Maoriland." A performance will be given by the Rub© trio of acrobats
