FREEZING WORKS CLOSE
I congestion *in stores. Position AT' WHAKAT4NE., DUE to shob/tage of ships. The shortage of ships {or meat has led to tHe temporary closing ' of the : East Coast Co-operative 'Freeing Company's works at Whakatnne, the stores now being full, During the whole of the past season this company has been -'■ ■' greatly hampered by the lack of' sufficient ship, ping space. filling for the whole season has been proceeding at about only half thel full capacity, this having been done in order that the services of tho men might he retained. The company states that considerable stock is offering, but it has not been able to accept more than a small proportion of it. The steamer Orari is due to load at Whokatane on May 15, and it ia not considered it will be worth while to reopen the. works until then. The Westphalen is due on June 21, but she will take only 10,000 carcases. The position is described as very acute and very unsatisfactory to farmers, who naturally are anxious to dispose of their stock now that winter is approaching.
