SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
Householders will this evening enjoy their annual opportunity of showing a practical interest in the schools. It is a regrettable fact that the election of school committees seldom awakens general interest and in too many cases the result is the selection of committees by meetings which represent a mere fraction of tho people entitled to vote. The apathy of the householders is in itself deplorable, but there is a!so in it the element of danger that small meetings leave the election in the hands of any clique which may have been, energetic enough to organise attendance. There is somo evidence that active electioneering has been in progress in some of tho Auckland suburban school districts in the interests of groups of candidates claiming to represent Labour. If the general body of electors in any district allows the contest to go by default there is nothing simpler than for the meeting to be captured by a ticket." Should such a thing occur, the onus will be on the nonvoter. Householders, and particularly those who arc parents, have the remedy in their own hands. If they attend 'thair district meetings, in numbers and cast their votes in strict accordance with their judgment of the merits of the candidates no " ticket " put forward in any sectional interest can succeed. It is to be hoped' that the meetings will be well attended and that the elections will be made solely in the interests of the schools and of the children, without reference to class or creed-
