MR. MASSEY MEETS STRIKERS.
CONFERENCE ADJOURNED.
NO TRAINS RUN YESTERDAY.
CITY COAL STOCKS DWINDLING.
The position in regard to the railway strike looks more hopeful. The Prime Minister arrived in Wellington last night, and had brief conferences with the representatives of all the societies. Mr. Massey stated subsequently that satisfactory progress had been made and that the discussions had been quite frank and friendly. The delegates of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants seemed satisfied with the way events were going when their interview with the Prime Minister terminated, the president remarking that the outlook was hopeful. The conference with the A.S.R.S. and the the E.F.C.A, will be resumed to-day. The North Island members of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants joined the engineers, -firemen and cleaners on strike yesterday in accordance with the decision of the executive. Ail trains in the North Island were again at a standstill, a'id no suburban trains were run from Auckland. The Auckland branch of the Railway Officers' Institute will take a ballot to-day as to whether they should strike in sympathy with the other two branches of the service. The men are reported to favour this course. The distribution of electric current from the Auckland power station is now assured until Monday next, and coal is available for the tramways to enable them to run for a few more .days, even if no further supplies are obtained.
