THE WHAKATAfiE TROUBLE. CONSIDERING .', THE DEMANDS., DIBECTOBS MEET ON MONDAY. | [8X - TELEGRAPH.—OWN . COERESPOSDENT.]' | '« ".. \ % -WHAKATANE.' Friday. The position in regard fa the Freezing Works strike, which commenced on Wednesday morning, is not much improved, only the engineers and clerks being left on duty at the works. As far as can be gathered, the labourers at the works'held a stop-work meeting on-Wednesday morning at :aine o'clock, and asked for several improvements in conditions, and a minimum rise in wages of 3d per hour for an, eighthour day. Minor portions of the demand were granted, but the rise in wages could not be agreed to until a meeting of the directors had been held. The labourers thereupon ceased work, leaving hides, offal, and other products about the noors. Their delegates then interviewed the slaughtermen, who also ceased'work. It is understood that n conference of the directors and employees vrill be held on Monday, when Mr. W. E. Sill, secretary of the 'Auckland Federated Union* of Freezing Workers, will ..be present. The Labourers' Union contends that unless their requests are acceded to the works will be branded " black," and no member of any federated union will be- allowed to be employed there. Nothing further can be gathered until the directors of the company meet on Monday. WELLEtTOTON CQNTEREITOE. WAGES FOB WHOLE! DOMINION. [BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON. Friday.
