THE BOARD OF TRADE.
AUCKLAND INVESTIGATIONS. SUPPLIES OF SUGAR. STANDARDISATION OF FOOTWEAR The position in regard to sugar supplies is being investigated by the Board of Trade, which is at present in Auckland. The board comprises Messrs. J. R. Hart and P. Hally,. with Mr. J. W. Collins as secretary. It is stated that the position in respect to sugar is very much improved compared with several weeks ago. The raw material is coming forward in considerable quantities, and the Colonial Sugar Company's works at Chelsea are engaged to their full capacity. The stocks in hand amount to practically nil, the whole of the sugar being sent out as it is refined.
On its present visit the board is interviewing all the local boot manufacturers with regard to the issue of licenses under the board's footwear scheme. This will complete a dominion inquiry, and the board will be in a position on its return to Wellington to attend to the issue of licenses to manufacturers of boots throughout the Dominion simultaneously. It is expected that in the South Island, and probably also in Auckland, many of the manufacturers will have sufficient stocks on hand to supply retailers with standardised boot* in January. Samples and of this footwear are. to be seen at the office of the Inspector of Factories.
The board is also making an inquiry into conditions of the timber trade, and evidence will probably be heard to-day.
