' The request that the men who were employed on the New Zealand mine-sweepers should be placed on the same footing as men of th 0 Imperial Navy in regard to the war gratuity, which recently was made by the executive of the Auckland Returned Soldiers' Association, has elicited an unfavourable reply from the Minister for Defence. At a meeting of the association's executive last evening a letter was received from Sit James Allen, expressing regret that, in view of the fact that the civilian crews of tile minesweepers received higher pay than the naval ratings engaged on the same work, it had been decided the New Zealand wax gratuity could not be paid to them- I 1 was decided to again writ© to the Minister en the subject. -; -».
