DRAINAGE FOR HAMILTON.
REPORT BY SUPERVISOR. COST ESTIMATED AT £70,620. [Br TELEGEAPH. — OWN COBSESPONDENT.] HAMILTON. Wednesday. A preliminary report upon the proposed drainage scheme for Hamilton was submitted by the borough supervisor, Mr. ] W. H. Stevens, to the Borough Council i to-night. ' In his report Mr. Stevens said that beI fore formulating any definite plan of operations comprehensive data should be col- ■ lected. He suggested that the scheme ! should provide for sewers to be laid as j far as possible on private property. This j would be considerably cheaper than laying I ' them under roads and connecting up to j properties. He estimated that 35| miles j of sewers would be required and the pro-, .bable cost would be £70,620. He urged that the scheme should be expedited, not ! only from the point of view of sanitation, but on account of the fact that prices of ; materials were steadily increasing. As an I instance he said that* since 1904 the cost of laying sewers had increased by 100 per ] | cent. The estimated population that the j scheme would benefit was 7310, but it provided for double the present popula- I . lion. i | After a short discussion in committee . 'it was decided that the whole council I should sit as a committee to consider the report, and that a subcommittee should prepare a preliminary report. I *
