— ♦■ THE MEAT EXPORT TRADE. EXTERMINATION OF RABBITS. [BY TELEGRAPH.PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHUKCR, Wednesday. At the annual meeting of the Canterbury Sheepowners' Union, the chairman, Mr. 1. D. Burnett, in moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, mentioned, inter alia, that the union was in no way "up against" Labour, believing in the true British principle that the "other man" should be heard. Regarding the sale and distribution of meat, it was agreed that no delegation should be sent to England to discuss the Question at Home until the Federated Meat Committee had been called together. It was resolved to take step! to form a .New Zealand Producers' Co-operative A 3sociation The rabbit nuisance was discussed, and it was agreed that Captain Neale should be written to regarding the use of gas in the destruction of the pest. The following resolution was also carried .-—"That 111. the opinion of the sheepowners of Canterbury it is not in the best interests of the province that a lucrative tr*de be budt up in rabbit export and rabbit fur, and that th national interests are best served by the extermination of the rabbit." Mention was made of the ravages of keas among high country flocks, and it was deeded to urge the Government to be more earnest in its steps to exterminate the birds.
