SUCCESSES BY STUDENTS. LECTURES ATTENDED BY 568. The Auckland University College Council met yesterday. Mr. T. W. Leys presided, and there were also present : —Professors A. P. W. Thomas, C. W. Egerton. H. W. Segar. Rev. J. H. Simmonds, Dr. H. D. Bamford, the Hon. G. J. Garland, and Messrs. H. J. D. Mahon, T. U. Wells, and J. F. Hosking. The annual report showed that the number of persons who attended lectures in 1918 was 568; graduates numbered 8; under-graduates 287; and non-matricu-lated students 253. The number of students who were exempted from attendance was 20. The schools of music, commerce, mining engineering and architecture were attended during the year by the following numbers of students:—Music, 46; commerce, 70; mining engineering, 50; architecture, 19. The following successes were gained by students of the college in the examination of the year:—Master of arts, 4; bachelor of arts (final section), 15; bachelor of arts (first section}, 9; bachelor of science (final section), 3; i bachelor of science (first section), ~6 ; master of laws, 1; bachelor of laws (final ■ section), 2; bachelor of laws (preliminary > section), 16. The honours list comprises — • First-class in Latin and English, 1; firsti class in Latin and French, 1; first-class > in botany, 1; second-class in economics, : 1. University senior scholarships, 3 (Eng-. i lish. French and history). Tho balance-sheet showed that the receipts, including balance of £12,789 2s > lid from 1917, and £17,022 awarded by > the Compensation Court for the loss of • the college temporary site and premises, i amounted to £47,913' 14s 2d. The expen- ' diture, including £12,542 4s toward the > cost of the new science building, and ' £1182 toward further provision of tempor- > any accommodation, amounted to £27,940 ' 18s 2d, leaving a balance of £19,972 16s. The resignations of Messrs. N. Bamford . and Ashley Hunter from the position of ' lecturers in the school of architecture were > accepted. An invitation was received from the i Council of the Otago University to attend • the jubilee celebrations of the college in 1 February next. The Professorial Board suggested Octo- " ber 16 as the opening date for the annual I college examinations. This date was ap- . proved. i The application of Mr. S. K. Phillips | for re-appointment as examiner in music I was referred to Dr. W. E. Thomas. The registrar was instructed to convey • to the Prime.
