HUNTLY MINERS IDLE.
6 SUPPOSED CREEP IN MINE. I, e SEVERAL SURFACE CRACKS, i LOCAL INSPECTOR'S VISIT. V . r 3 RESULT NOT DISCLOSED. ' [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HUNTLY. Monday. 1 Owing to what are regarded as evidences of a creep in the north section of the • Taupiri Company's Extended coal mine 1 the miners employed in that mine did not ' go to work to-day. 5 The signs of the supposed creep are 7 noticeable on the surface above the north J section workings. Six cracks have occurred l in Hakawa Street, three or four chains 3 from the main road and about five chains > from the river. The principal crack is 1 about 3in wide. A slight crack also was showing tp-day on the railway line, run- ' ning along the edge of the formation ' parallel with the line and about 3ft from ' the rails. The street in which the cracks ! have occurred does not appear to have " sunk at all. The miners, who state that they regard the cracks as an evidence of a serious , creep in the mine, decided not to work L to-day, pending an investigation. A creep i in a mine does not always imply anything I of a serious nature, but in the case of the Extended mine the nearness of the giver is regarded as a reason for extra care. The mine workings are under the river in 1 several places. The depth of the workings . from the surface of the ground is about i 500 ft. A meeting of the Miners' Union was i held this afternoon, but at the conclusion j it was reported that no decision had been ; reached. 'Die local Government inspector, ; Mr. B. Bennie. went into the mine to-day, 5 but he declined to give any information i I as to the result of his inspection, as he r stated that his report must first go to Wellington. It is stated that the inspecting engineer of coal mines, Mr. F. Reed, may visit Huntly for the purpose of in- ' specting the mine. I COMPANY OFFICIALS' STATEMENT. 1 - "A SLIGHT SUBSIDENCE." A statement in regard to the position l war obtained yesterday from the Auckland officials of the Taupiri Company. They ' stated that no work was done in the Ex--1 tended Mine yesterday on account of a - slight subsidence in the north section of > the mine. Mr. Bennie, it was added, was i making an inspection, and later would 1 submit a report to the mine owners. About a hundred railway trucks were at . Hunt.!y yesterday waiting to be filled with i coal.
