TROUBLE IN NEAR EAST.
SETTLEMENT OF POLAND. PROTEST FROM GERMANY. A. and X.Z. LONDON. Dec. 22. Tho Polish Government decreed the election of a National Assembly on January 26, including representatives of the eastern provinces of Prussia. The German press strongly protests, alleging that tho Poles desire to annex German territory. M. Ignaco Paderewski, the famous Polish pianist, who has devoted the last four years to working for tho liberation of Poland, has gone to Poland on board a British battleship to rally the people against the Bolsheviks.
APPEAL FROM THE LETTS. PROTECTION OF ALLIES. WASHINGTON, Dec. 22. The. Lettish Government has appealed to the United States in common with the Allies for protection against the Bolsheviks, the withdrawal of the Germans from Lithuania leaving tho country at the mercy of the Bolsheviks.
ESTHONIAN REPUBLIC.
AID OF ALLIES SOUGHT. BERNE, Dec. 22. The Esthonian Provisional Government has placed tho republic under the common protection of the Allies pending the decision of tho Peace Conference.
VIOLENCE IN UKRAINE.
FRENCH OFFICIAL KILLED. BERNE, Doc 22. Colonel Vjllaivp, Chief French Commissioner sent to collect evidence concerning the conflict in the Ukraine, has been shot and killed by Ukrainian soldiers.
