FIRE AT WHAKATANE.
TWO SHOPS DESTROYED. [BY TEUORAPn.—OWN' CORRESPONDENT.] WHAKATANE. Thursday. FntF, broke out in Mr. J. Clarke's jewel- ' 7 shop, in a building adjoining the Whakataiie post office, at 2.30 p.m. today, and resulted in the complete destruction of the stock of jewellery, watches clocks, etc. Messrs. Wong Lee and Co., fruiterers and laundrymen, carrying on business in tho game block, were also heavy losers. The building is owned by the Rev. P. Ma.ii-?> of Huirtly, and is insured in tho South British Insurance Company, but the details of the Insurances ore not available.
