DECISIONS IN AUCKLAND.

EXEMPTIONS AND LEAVE. The First Auckland Military Service Board continued yesterday to hear appeals for exemption and extension of leave.

J. Corbett, railway employee, applied for two months' leave on account of his wife's health. Appellant stated that ho and his brother had a farm of 200 acres at Taihape. The farm, however, was in appellant's name, and his brother was called into camp. Ho was not satisfied with the present management of the farm and might be compelled to apply for total exemption. Leave was granted until May 23. Michael T. Melican, railway employee, Newmarket, applied for exemption on the ground that he was-supporting hi? widowed mother. He had a married brother in Auckland with three children. The board advised him to apply for assistance to the Financial Assistance Board. Leave until May 23 was granted. James H. Wall, railway employee (Mr. Hail Skelton), stated he was the sole support of his invalid widowed mother and on orphan girl. _ Ho had two brothers with large families, but they were finable to assist. Tho appeal was adjourned for a few days, to enable appellant to procure a medical certificate regarding his mother's condition.

Roderick Mcleod, Green Lane, said he had volunteered four times, and been clawed C2, then A, and later CI. In the belief that he was unfit for service, ho had married, bought a ho'jse, and incurred financial liabilities. He produced a doctor's certificate to the effect that { appellant would probably not be able to stand camp life. The board adjourned the appeal until the appellant was medic- j ally rc-examir.cd. Wilfred Bunker, Ota- 1 hunu (Mr. Stanton), a first division | reservist, classed CI, applied to be placed ' in Class Cof the Second Division. He j was married in May, 1915, and now had. two children. The appeal was adjourned j until Cass D of the Second Division is j called up. ' Derrick Lupton, Kingsland, applied fori exemption, on the ground that his two brothers were at the front, and he was the sole support of his widowed mother. The case was adjourned for three months. T. Bollinger applied for exemption for I his son, 0. V. Hollingcr, u volunteer,' until the return from the front of one of his four other sons. He had a five-acre I farm, and could not carry it on by him- ' self, owing to a paralytic stroke. Appellant's son said bis parents could probably manage without him, but they felt they should have at least one of their five sons at home. Tho board intimated it would grant a further three months' leave, but if none of the other sons were likely to return at tho end of that period, his remaining son would have to go. Joseph Tolhopf, farmer, Awaroa, said he had a farm of 467' acres, carrying sheep and cattle*. Appellant «vas also looking after the farm of his brother, who had cut his foot with an axe, and would be crippled for some time. The appeal was adjourned sine die. Eric McConnell, Ppnsonby, an accountant in the Public Trust Office, was granted leave until June 20, on tho application of the deputy-public trustee, to enable a substitute to be trained to fill his position. The appeals of R. 0. Gardner, New Lynn, and James Simmonds, Grey Lynn, were allowed on the production of proof that they belonged to Class B of the Second Division. J, S. Thomas, porter, Mercer, was granted three months leave, owing to his wife's ill-health. Bernard Mason, Auckland, was allowed until May 23 to arrange his business affairs. Anton Tolhopf, farmer, Puhoi, was allowed leave until August 15 to complete fencing work. Leave till June 20 was granted Gilbert Walker, Kihikihl, to enable him to do necessary farm work. The appeal of T. Jennings, Matapara, on account of his son, W. Jennings, was reviewed. Leave was granted until May 23. Cyril J. Tercel, shipwright, Ponsonby, was granted leave untiLJune 20. V. C. Parsons, Grey Lynn, who has three brothers in. the firing-line, was granted exemption until ono of them returns.
