UTTERING A VALUELESS CHEQUE.

A number of cases were heard in the Police Court yesterday, beforo Mr. F. V. Frazer, S.M.

John Ranskio, alias Robinson, an Austrian, 70 years of age, pleaded guilty to obtaining the sum of £15 from George Pirritt by means of a valueless cheque. The magistrate said Ranskie had spent a considerable time in gaol during the past 13 years, and was now serving six months for a similar offence at Hamilton. Hanskie was convicted and sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment with hard labour. John 13. Donovan, a steward (Mr. Hackett),' guilty to stealing a tin each of baiting powdor and pepper, of a total value of 3s 6d, the property of the Richardson Steamship Company. The •explanation was that Donovan gave the articles to a wharf labourer named Evans in return for services rendered by Evans in assisting with tho removal of ship's stores. Donovan was convicted and ordered to como up for sentence on February 12. Alfred Evans, wharf labourer, charged with receiving the goods from Donovan, knowing them to have been dishonestly obtained, pleaded not guilty, and was remanded until February 7, bail in one suroty of £25 being allowed. Alexander Aiderton, 19 years of age, on a charge of indecently assaulting a girl five years of age, was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Ante Katavioh, a Dalmatian, 28 years of age, who was arrested at Dairy Flat on January 23 on a charge of vagrancy wag sentenced to one month's imprisonI ment with hard labour.

Robert Exton, a seafaring man, charged with disorderly behaviour and refusing to leave the promises of tho United Service Hotel on January.23, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. George Fischer, butcher, of Great North Road, for cruelly ill-treating a horso by working it while fame, was fined £3 and 37s costs, and an assistant named W. Poistlewaile was ordered to pay costs 7s.
