RED CROSS WORK.

JOINT COMMITTEE MEETING ROSE DAY TO BE HELD. A meeting of the Joint Oonvmitteo of the Auckland centre of the British Red Cross and the Order of St. John was held yesterday morning, the Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson, presiding. Mr. G. H. Wilson, the newly-appointed treasurer, presented a balance-sheet to date, which showed that, after remitting last month £25,000 to London, on account of Red Cross receipts, there was a balance in hand, with recent contributions, and after providing for commitments, of £18,000. It was de cided to remit immediately £15,000 to the British Red Cross in London.

It was reported that donations wore being well maintained, and votes of thanks were passed to the following for donations received:—The superintendent and members of tho Auckland police fcrco, £2600; Commercial Travellers' Association, £6500; Whakatane, £1000; Waiuku, £450: Rodney County carnival executive, promised from the returns of the recent carnival, approximately, £6000. It was decided to assemblo for shipment food, jams, and other articles for Mesopotamia, and to despatch them at the ! earliest opportunity. Advices were received from Bombay that the last shipment of goods was much appreciated. It was decided to cable to Bombay inquiring as to further clothing requirod. Initial arrangements for the inauguration of a Queen Alexandra Rose Day for Auckland were made, and it was decided to cable immediately for 150,000 roses, tho j date of the fixture to be arranged as soon as advice as to the shipment of roses is ' received- It was explained that the Rose | Day was to be held in aid of a special fund being raised by the Joint Committee for the Functional treatment and education of returned disabled, or partly disabled, soldiers. Mr. C. F. Bickford was appointed in place of Mr. P. H. Upton to represent the Joint Committee at the Dominion Conference on Red Cross matters, to be held at Christchurch on February 8. A committee was appointed to inquire into the question of supplementing the quantity of suitable food provided for the men in the hospitals. Speaking at the conclusion of the meeting the Mayor said recent advices from the front indicated the pressing Meed for continued efforts in Red Cross work. The demands were more urgent than ever, and the continued support of the public was needed to maintain the work at the level that had been reached.
