TROPHIES OF WAR.

MATTER OF ALLOCATION. CONCENTRATION OPPOSED!' Speaking in respect to the statement of the Minister for Internal Affairs, the Hon. G. W. Russell, regarding the action of the Auckland, Christchurch, and , D.iuiedin citizens in challenging the right of the Government to concentrate war trophies in a national collection at Wellington, tho Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson, stated yesterday that it was quite true that, as far as Auckland was concerned, it had been suggested there should be a reasonable allocation of trophies after the war. A consider, able number of war weapons would no doubt be received by the Dominion, and it appeared to him it would be more appropriate to have the trophies distributed among the four chief centres than to have them assembled in one city. It was also probable that more than one specimen of the different trophies would be provided, and he considered it highly desirable that the matter of allocation should be held over till after the war. Another factor that had to be considered in connection with the distribution of trophies, said the Mayor, was the erection of a suitable memorial for soldiers who ; had fallen in the war. The matter had i been discussed in Auckland, and on all sides it was deemed to be more appropriate to leave it over for determination till after peace was declared. There was a strong feeling in Auckland, however, ! that at an early date following the I declaration of peace, the citizens fhould i bo asked to consider what form a per--1 manent memorial should take.
