CLAIM TO A PEERAGE.
SUIT BY A GARDENER. A. and N.Z. LONDON, Jan. 30. The hearing has commenced of the Waterford peerage case, in which George Beresford, a gardener, asked for a declaration that he was the lawful son of the fifth Marquess of Waterford, who married Florence Vivian after a divorce action in 1870. The respondents allege that Beresford is a natural son of Georgina Tooth, and was born in Hoiborn workhouse. Georgina Tooth was a sister of Mrs. Vivian's cook.
The Marquessato of Waterford dates back to 1786. The fifth Marquess was John Henry do la Poer, who succeeded to the title in 1866. In 1872 he married a daughter of Major George Rowley, but she died less than a year later. He married again in 1874, his second wife being Lady Blanche Somerset, only daughter of the eighth Duke of Beaufort. He had two sons and two daughters by the second marriage. The present Marquess is a grandson.
