FIGHT WITH SUBMARINE.

GALLANT FRENCH TRAWLER. LONDON. Jan. 20. The story of a bold though unsuccessful attempt by a French trawler belonging to Brest to turn the tables on a submarine comes from Brittany. The steam trawler St. Mathieu, 186 tons, encountered a submarine off Brest. The submarine opened fire. The trawler cut away her nets and steamed towards the submarine, but was unable to get her 2in Bun within range. The submarine's shells killed the gunner and the mate and two of the crev.-. Nine survivors, including the captain, got away before the submarine sank the trawler, but after 31 hours in an open boat the heavy sea dashed the boat against a trawler which was about to rescue thorn, and only four were saved.
