HOSPITAL RATES. ,

REPLY TO THE MINISTER. The comparison made by the Minister in Charge of Hospitals, the Hon. G. W. Russell, between the hospital rates levied in different parts of the Dominion, appears to have been based upon a misunderstanding. In speaking on the subjeot yesterday the Mayor. remarked, that the Minister had been quoted as saying that the average rate over the whole Dominion was less than l-5d in the £, while in some small centres it was 2Jd in the £. This, said Mr. Gunson, required some further explanation, because the Minister did not say whether the rates as quoted were calculated upon the annual or upon capital value. The hospital and charitable aid rate in Auckland City was 3Jd in the £, annual value. Tho rate of l-5d mentioned by Mr. Russell, which was evidently on the capital basis, would be equivalent to 3 l-5d in the £, annual value, and so the Auckland rate was very little above the average. The Mayor added that lie intended to communicate with the Minister upon tho subject.
