HECTOR MEDAL AND PRIZE. AUCKLAND RECIPIENT. (BT telegraph.—press ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON. Tuesday. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Institute to-day the president's address was devoted mainly to emphasising the great importance of scientific research, and urging greater encouragement thereof by the Government. The Hector Memorial Award Committee unanimously recommended Mr. T. F. j Cheeseman, curator of the Auckland ; museum, as the recipient of the Hector, medal and prize for research in botany. MR. The president of the New Zealand Institute, at. the annual meeting to-day, read a letter from the convenor of the Hector Memorial Award Committee, Dr. E. Cockayne, slating that the committee's recom- j mendation that the award go' to MrCheeseman was based on the grounds not only of the great excellence of his published researches in New Zealand botany, which have been carried on without break since the early seventies, but also because of the suprehie influence of his work, especially of his admirable manual of New Zealand flora, and botanical investigations throughout the Dominion.

'iilie Hector memorial medal, which is to be awarded to Mr. T. F. Cheeseman, is ;;ivcn annually by the New Zealand l Institute for original research work on one of seven 1 specified scientific subjects. Thus I the medal is given only once in seven i years for any one subject. The honour, ! which is in memory of Sir James Hector, ! was originated by a number of New ZeaI land scientists, who subscribed a considerI able sum of money, the interest on which | is used to provide the medal and a prize l in cash. Mr. Cheeseman's research work ill botany is well known, and his published works include " The Manual of New Zealand Flora," and "Illustrations of New Zealand Flora," besides about 100 smaller memoirs.
