HECTOR MEDAL AND PRIZE. AUCKLAND RECIPIENT. (BT telegraph.—press ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON. Tuesday. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Institute to-day the president's address was devoted mainly to emphasising the great importance of scientific research, and urging greater encouragement thereof by the Government. The Hector Memorial Award Committee unanimously recommended Mr. T. F. j Cheeseman, curator of the Auckland ; museum, as the recipient of the Hector, medal and prize for research in botany. MR. The president of the New Zealand Institute, at. the annual meeting to-day, read a letter from the convenor of the Hector Memorial Award Committee, Dr. E. Cockayne, slating that the committee's recom- j mendation that the award go' to MrCheeseman was based on the grounds not only of the great excellence of his published researches in New Zealand botany, which have been carried on without break since the early seventies, but also because of the suprehie influence of his work, especially of his admirable manual of New Zealand flora, and botanical investigations throughout the Dominion.
