DEFENCE EXPENDITURE

COMMENCEMENT OF INQUIRY. SCOPE OF THE COMMISSION. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION'.] WELLINGTON; Tuesday. The Defence Expenditure Commission met to-day to discuss preliminaries. The commission is directed to inquire into and report on the financial administration of tho Defence Department, and other Departments acting with it during the war, with reference to the following matters: (1) Headquarters and other administrative branches of tho service. (2) Methods of control or supervision of Departments. (3) Pay and allowances of Defence Forces, or of civilians engaged in services in relation to war. I (4)- Military stores equipment and supplies. (5) Military camps. (6) Transporting of troops. (7) Hospital ships. ' (8) Military hospitals. (9) Medical and dental examinations and treatment. (10) Military Service Boards. (11) All other matters involving public Departments for tho purposes of the war. The commission has power to call and examine witnesses and to call for documents and records. Its report is to be completed by June 30 next.
