Stringer has succeeded Captain Norton as master of a Union Company boat. Captain F. W. Jackson is to take command of the Kowhai when Captain Velianaweth will go on holiday. An inquiry is being held at Nelson by Mr. F. O'B. Loughnan, S.M., into the circumstances connected -with the loss of the ketch Result, in Torrent Bay, on December 5. Captain H. Collins is sitting with Mr. Loughnan as assessor. The harbourmaster at Greymouth (Captain Cox) reported at the last meeting of the Harbour Board that, on December 19 a steamer went aground while shifting down the river at low water. The vessel got too far over, and grounded with her keel, causing her to swing round and damage the collier Kahika. slightly about midships. A life-saving jacket which was invented by Mrs. Norman Beaumont, wife of Captain Beaumont, of Dunedin, is reported to be receiving recognition throughout the British mercantile marine. The great buoyancy of this jacket has been proved, under severe tests both in New Zealand, and England. Advice has just been received by Captain Beaumont that the British Admiralty has adopted the jacket for naval service, and Mrs. Beaumont has .received an order from the Director of Military Sea Transport at Homo for 30,000 of the jackets. The steamers engaged in the 'cross-Channel service have also installed the Salvus jacket. CHANGES OP MASTERS. Captain Pierotti goes from the Kanieri to. the Kimu; Captain Parris, from the Rimu to the Clansman; and Captain Dorling from 1 the Rarawa to the Manaia. Captain Johnson has been promoted from chief officer to 1 master of the Kanieri.
