ANNIVERSARY REGATTA

RACING ON WAITEMATA, GOOD SAILING CONDITIONS. EVENTS KEENLY CONTESTED. The time-honoured Anniversary Day Regatta was held on Waitemata Harbour yesterday under weather conditions highly favourable for yacht and launch racing, but not exactly idpal from the point of view of those of the public. In the afternoon light showers fell, and the northeasterly wind dropped somewhat. The racing generally was decidedly interesting, and some very close contests were witnessed, particularly in the power-boat events and the rowing races. Complete success attended the efforts of tho Regatta Committee, and it is duo to tho members' untiring efforts that tho 78th annual aquatic gala will rank as one of the most successful of recent years. Tho result completely justified the committee's optimism in holding the regatta. The entries constituted an increase of about 50 per cent, over those received last year.

Tho flagship was visited by over 400 people.- Among the visitors was the Hon., A. M. Myers, Minister for Munitions. He was welcomed by the chairman of tho committee, Mr. J. B. Johnston. Mr. Myers congratulated the Regatta Association on its determination to keep the regatta alive. He said lie was aware there had been some pessimistic criticism from, some people who considered that aquatic sports should be abandoned in war time, but thoro was sufficient answer in the fact that between 800 and 1000 Auckland yachtsmen had left New Zealand to serve in the present war. He believed that aquatic sports wero of the greatest value in fostering tho naval spirit—a matter of great importance in viow of tho problems that would ariso in regard to tho control of the Pacific.

Large numbers of spectators viewed the racing from the ends of tho wharves, and a great many others made use of the Northern Company's special excursion steamers. The proceeds aro to be devoted to tho Auckland Provincial Patriotic and War Relief Fund.
