SALE OF ART COLLECTION.

A sale of the paintings and the general art collection of Mr. L. J. Steele, the well-known Auckland artist, took place yesterday at Messrs. Richard Arthur and Co. auction rooms. Mr. Steele for many years has been associated with the art of this city, and two of his best works— "The Explorer's Message," and his portrait of the late Sir John Logan Campbell —are hung in the Auckland Art Gallery. Owing to a serious Illness he ordered the disposal of his valuable collection of art treasures. Ihere was a large attendance at the sale, and bidding was in most cases very brisk. Some of the prices realised for the artist's own works were "The Entombment," £31; painting of a Maori head, £1 17s; miniature, " Adam and Eve," £7; painting, "No Water," £6engraving, "The Duel," £3 15s. For the general collection the higher prices were : Cosway miniature, £7 10s ; miniature. 1712 period, £3; two solid silver candlesticks, £10 10s ; oil painting hv Ettv, £12 10s - eirJ*caMiig. date liis, £7 10s: two water bottles, £4 2s 6d.
