THE MARIST BROTHERS.
DENIAL OF ALLEGATION. The district priest at Waerengaahika, near Gis borne, telegraphs denying the allegation made by Mr. Nosworthy in the House of Representatives to the effect that the Catholic priest at Waerengaahika, had said the Prime Minister and Sir Joseph Ward had promised Bishop Cleary that exemption ' would be granted to Marist Brothers.
Mr. Nosworthy recently asked whether the Prime Minister or Sir Joseph Ward could refute the statement made by a Roman Catholic priest at Waerengaahika, near Gisborne, on Sunday, July 29, to his congregation after the celebration of Mass that " when Mr. Massey and Sir Joseph Ward were in England they were interviewed by Bishop Cleary and they gave him their promise that the Marist Brothers would not be "conscripted." Mr Massey, in reply to the question, denied that such a promise had been given.
