OBITUARY.
MB. M. O'CONNOR The death occurred suddenly yesterday morning of Mr. Maurice O'Connor, an old resident of New Zealand. Mr. O'Conttt, was bora at Kilcusnan, County Derry, Ireland, and wat 67 years of age. Ho came to New Zealand about 43 years ago, and as a member of the Armed Constabulary, f.ook part in the arrest of Te Kooti. He" was appointed chief detective at' Chrislchureh, and later served in Dunedin. He resigned from the police force after 17 years' service. Upon returning to Auckland Mr. O'Connor took over the conduct of the Waverley Hotel, remaining in charge for about' 14 years. Subsequently lie bought the Thistle Hotel, but of late years ho had been leading a retired life. ME. SAMUEL WHITE. Mr. Samuel White, who had been a resident of Auckland for over fifty years, died on Monday at his residence in Islington Street, Ponsonhy, after a uhort illness. Mr. White, who was nearly 76 years of age, was. a native of Nottingham, ■ and served an apprenticeship as a lace-' maker in that town. He came to New Zealand in the ship Gertrude, and, after being in the Kaipara district for soma time, he removed to Auckland, where ha founded the firm of Messrs. Sam White and Sons, contractors. He was the contractor for ihe erection of the Auckland Exhibition Buildings in 1898. He leaves a widow and four sons and two daughters. The funeral, which took place at Waiknmete yesterday afternoon, was largely attended. > MR. S. HAGUE SMITH. | A well-known citizen of Auckland in the early days died recently in Sydney in the person of Mr. S. Hague Smith*. With his brother, Mr. John Hague Smith, the late Mr. Smith bad a large hardware business in this city. They cams from Grantham, Lincolnshire, England, in the ship Mataoka, in 1859. When the Thames goldfields were discovered the late Mr. Smith ran a service of steamers between Auckland and Thames, the two vessels employed for the purpose being the paddlo steamers Duke of . Edinburgh and tho Prince Alfred. Some years ago Mr. Smith was the Sydney representative of the . New Zealand Insurance Company. Until quite lately he was Sydney man-' ager for the Colonial Mutual Fire Insurance Company. '
