Gome little time back a commission was entrusted by an Auckland resident to Captain Ernest Tanner, of Newmarket, to select a horse of staying blood that combined a good outeross for St. Simon blood. Captain Tanner's choice fell upon the four-year-old Folydamon. tho leading lines of whoso breed-ing-read as follows:— POLYDAMON. Polydamon is expected to reach Auckland during tho present month. WAIMAI AND THE V.R.C. GRAND NATIONAL. When Waimai's name was hot week cabled ?.s an acceptor for the V.R.C. Grand National Steeplechase it seemed as though the owners of the Spalpeen gelding had overlooked the date 'or the payment of forfeit, for it was genially understood that tic, contemplated trip had been abandoned. It subsequently transpired, however, that everything was quite in order, and all going well the son of Spalpeen may be expected to lino up at the post at Flcmington next Saturday week, when tho big cross-country race comes up for decision. With list Tib Wairnai is weighted up to his full deserts; and though it would have been more- satisfactory had ho reached the scene earlier, his jumping abilities may bo expected to stand him in good stoad when the final test comes to be applied. THE RACING CURTAILMENT. When a statement was recently published to tho effect that the Government, edict with regard to the curtailment of racing would extend to making two da:rs the limit of any gathering, most people declined to take such seriously. Though so far no definite pronouncement has been made by the Minister for Internal Affairs to that effect, information received in Auckland during the past few <!„.,, goes to support what was previously published- In the event of tho two days limit being insisted upon, the committee of the Auckland Racing Club will have to again address themselves to the task of shaping next season's programme, and a meeting in the spring may after all be included in the Ellerslie fixtures.

After Bon Revo 'won the May Hurdle Race at the Wangantti Jockey Club's meeting some very higa-sounding phrases were applied in regard to the prowess of the Boniform gelding as a hurdler. In the interval, however, Bon Reve has proved a perfect disappointment, and he nust have cost his followers a nice mm Despite his recent failures the dual Derby winner counted sufficient friends to send him out favourite for .theHawke's Bay Eurdlo Race, run at Hastings last Friday, but he was again counted out of a place. Mr. Coyle is apparently convinced that too high an estimate has been formed of Bon Reve's capacity, for in framing the weights for the Winter Hurdle Race to be run at Trentham on Wednesday next he deemed the situation met by placing 10st Mb opposite his name. Sydney papere to hand bringing details of the victory gained by the New Zealand colt Immortcl at tho Rosehill Meeting on the 23rd ult. show that he sprung a pronounced surprise on the assemblage. Immortcl beat a field of 21 in good style, and he is not likely to bo eo greatly overlooked on the next occasion when he sets out to carry Mr. G. D. Greenwood's colours. Iceberg, who wen the Turamoe Hurdlo Race at the Hawke's Bay meeting last Saturday, is a grey sbn of the Castor horse Coronet. Iceberg is credited with being a genuine sort and he may be expected to boo a better day. . NOTES FROM ELLERSLIE. . D. Moraghan has Gluetsnus in fine condition. The Gluten gelding put up a fair trial prior to leaving for Trentham on Tuesday morning. The norse was sent to Trenthani in P. Burns's charge. W. Sharp leaves by boat with Glendalough and Cokely,, for Wellington. The former, prior to leaving, was tried out with Marconi, P. Jones, tailing time by .the forelock, left by train for Trcr.tham on Monday with El Gallo, Penniless and Brown Loch. Billy \Viggs was to be included in tho team, but did not apparently please tho beads.

On Monday corning Fionnuala was put over six of the pony battens, but ''.id not quite display the same dash as in, hei' initial effort.

Tararn Jack, Rockfield and Thrive* left by train for Trentham oa Monday. The trip answered a question satisfactorily prior to being entrained. Colonel Soult started work again at the beginning of the month, looking as fresh as paint, and will" require very little pressure put on before running a good race. Analogue, by Seaton Delaral—Analogy, baa drifted back to Ellerxlie. and at the present time is located in J, Chaafe's stables, and is track mate with Goldsize and Co.

Before leaving Auckland Waimai and Lupcrino put up sound work on the tracks, both on Monday. and Tuesday, and on each occasion they pleased the onlookers. _ The trainer of the ancient Golden Glow informed the writer that the well-natured son of Saracen—Jcanette will be an absentee from the Wellington Racing Club's Winter Meeting.

Dungannon has joined the actives again after a short spell and is now a track companion of Jass. at headquarters. The Spalpeen gelding looks all the better for a, rest. J. Anderton. who has been in the doctor's hands since the A.R.C. winter meeting, was riding work a?ain on Tuesday, and leaves shortly for Wellington. W. Ryan has also booked up to bo present at the same meeting.

Honfield, which proved a bit of a disappointment at the June meeting, has started wo*k again. Bluotono is still resting. The owner of Marconi was present to see th» Soult eelding beat his two pacemakers, Empire and Glendalough, over a sand circuitin awd time.

S. HcnoVrsori returned to Auckland from Hastings suffering from rm attack of nlerrisy and is now confined to his home. This kept hi->! from completing riding engagements last Saturday.
