GIFTS FOR MEN OVERSEAS.
FURTHER INQUIRY BEING MADE. Tin decision of the Auckland Women's Patriotic League executive to suspend temporarily the Dominion gift scheme was explained yesterday to the working committee of the league by the Mayoress, Mrs. Gunson, and the secretary, Miss Spedding. The ' committee unanimously endorsed the action of the executive and pledged its support in contributing money for the Dominion gift scheme if it is continued and for regimental funds if necessary as a substitute. Miss Spedding reported that cable messages had been sent to several officers at the front, to ascertain • the position at present. Replies had not yet been received. It was decided to inform branch leagues that as soon as full evidence was I obtained the members of the city league would be called together to decide on the policy for the future. In the meantime, said Mrs. Gunson, it was hoped the subscriptions which had been generously given from many quarters to the Dominion gift scheme would be continued, with the proviso that should it not be possible to forward parcels monetary gifts would be sent. The secretary explained that this would be done with every precaution for insuring that the money should benefit those < for whom it wan intended, but until fur- ' ther information was available no full j scheme could be formulated. i About 100 members of the various 1 branches attended the meeting.
