A sentence of five years' penal servitude was imposed on Arthur Leggo, a teller in the Government Savings Bank, for embezzlement. [Leggo was charged last month with stealing £14,000, the property of the Government Savings Bank. A written statement by accused disclosed that the money was lost during two months in betting on horse-racing. At the Rand-1 wick meeting, he started with £4000 on the first day, and on the last day, in a final effort to recover, he ventured £7000,1 supporting his fancies in large sums. He | put £2500 on one horse, and in the end lost everything excepting £500, which ho handed to the commissioners when he made a clean breast of his defalcations.] VICTIM OP SUBMARINE.
