THE SECOND DIVISION.
METHOD OF CALLING UP,
NEW SYSTEM SUGGESTED. .
The question of whether a change should be made in the calling up of reservists when the second division is required w« raised by the president of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, Mr. R. Burns at yesterday's meeting of the council of that chamber.
The president said it seemed likely that if some action were not taken by the commercial community the second division would be called up in the same haphazard manner as that adopted in the calling up of the first division. Some means, ha . thought, should be devised whereby the men least essential to the carrying on of 'the Dominion'B industries should be taken first. Mn T. Peacock: If a selection is rnado it may give offence. The President: Any system is open to a certain degree of criticism. Mr. A. B. Roberton agreed that thtf blunders made in the calling up of th& first division should not be repeated in the calling up of the second division. Mr. T. H. Macky suggested that business firms should arrange their employees in schedules prepared according to the' respective importance of the different men's services.
The President: The most essential men certainly should be called upon last. Mr. Peacock: Do you not think that the Government will do' that in any case! The President: They so far have not shown any disposition to do it. After further discussion it was agreed that a committee, consisting of Mean, E. Anderson and A. M. Ferguson, )* appointed to confer on the subject with the National Efficiency Board.
