ACTION AGAINST BOOKMAKERS.
SEVERAL CHRISTCHUBCH CASES.

A number of alleged bookmakers appeared at the Magistrate's Court to-day, charged with having been on the Canterbury Jockey Club's course on April 9, contrary to the regulations of the club, which excluded them. From the evidence it appeared that the Jockey Club had tolerated the presence of bookmakers on a certain part of the course, near the scraping sheds, but the committee had decided to clear them out. Harry Hulston, who said he had not made a bet since bookmakers were abolished, was fined £1. The charges against Thomas Barrett, who remarked he was there as a guest of the club, being a returned soldier, and John W. Massey, were dismissed. Edgar Neate, who was fined £1, admitted that he was a bookmaker, but alleged that Detective Kraetzer had appointed him secret agent to keep back "the boys," who were told they could stay, so long as they did not move nearer to the grandstand.
