MYSTERIOUS MISSION.
M. CAILLAUX IN ROME.
ASSUMED NAME USED.
LONDON. "Dec. 31. j The Times correspondent at Pari* states that M. Caillaux, former French Minister for Finance, and his, wife registered at a , Rome hotel as Monsieur and Madame Lenoir. They frequently visited the Vatican, and also called upon leading Giolittians and representatives of neutral countries. M." Caillaux's intrigues at Romo are, it is believed, connected with international high finance. Caillaux and his wife live Sumptuously, having, apparently, endless funds. They have been warned that they will bo mobbed if they reappear in France. Caillaux retains a strong influence in the ! Chamber of Deputies. I A message from Rome states that his' visit has excited curiosity. He appears to have been in England. A surprising peaco propaganda is reported as emanat- j ing from him. Ho recommends in certain | Germanophile Italian quarters a Franco- j Italian policy of startling boldness. It ie! understood that ho said Germany was dis- J posed to treat France generously, and to] compel Austria to grant most of Italy's national aspirations, tho only condition I being that Germany should have a freo hand in dealing with Russia, Roumania, and tho other Balkan States. It is reported that the Italian Government intended dealing drastically with Caillaux, who has left or is leaving. It is believed that ho has no intention of returning to France at present.
