Remarkable scenes were witnessed at the Hotel Cecil, which was taken over at short notice for offices for the Air Ministry. Five hundred guests were forced to leave within 48 hours, the notice to quit including the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Mr. Massey, and Sir Joseph Ward, who moved to the Savoy Hotel. Many guests, unable to find lodgings or vehicles, had personally to move their belongings in handcarts.
