RUSSIANS TAKE UP NEW POSITIONS ON THE SERETH.
TENACIOUS DEFENCE OF MOLDAVIAN PLAIN. Australian and N.Z. Cablo Association. LONDON. Jan. 0. A Russian communique states: "We took up new positions on the line of the Putna and Sereth Rivers. We defeated attacks south of the Oitoz River.- The Roumanians fell back four miles west of Monestar and Kachineul, or* the Kasino River." A German communique states: "The enemy is tenaciously defending the valleys in Bereozk 'Mountains leading into the Moldavian Plain, but we are advancing step by step. We stormed positions on both sides of the Kasino and Susita Valleys, and reached the Putna sector. The enemy is holding a new position on the opposite bank. We drove back the Russians to the Crangeni-Kanesti line, and stormed Garleaska. Yesterday's captures now total 5-100 men and three guns." An Austrian communique states: The enemy was driven back south-east of Fockshani to the mouth of the Rimniea Sarat."
