THE PRICE OF FRUIT.
HIGH FOR ALL CLASSES.
DUE TO LIMITED SUPPLIES.
As the summer season progresses the shortage of,fruit supplies becomes more apparent. It is estimated by one authority that only about one-third last year's quantity of stone fruit is coming in this year, while of some fruits there has been practically no supply at all. At this time of year, cherries from Australia are usually plentiful, but very few have been obtainable this season,, owing to shipping difficulties and a poor crop. Strawberries were selling at half-a-crown a pound wholesale yesterday, whereas a plentiful supply of other fruits usually reduces considerably the price of this fruit after Christmas. Very high price., are ruling for all fruit just now. Cases of apples usually selling at from 6s to 7s per case, have been fetching as high as 18s 6d per case this week, while European plums are fully 100 per cent, dearer.
