FRENCH GAIN GROUND SOUTH-WEST OF ESTREES.

BAD WEATHER HAMPERS OPERATIONS ON THE SOMME TEMPORARY GERMAN SUCCESS WEST OF POZIERES. Australian and N Z. Cable. (Received T p.m.) LONDON. August 14. Sir Douglas Haig reports: " The situation is unchanged on the whole British front. The usual artillery activity continues. There has been a bombing raid and much successful aerial work. During the night, west of Pozieres, the enemy gained a temporary footing in portions of the trenches we captured yesterday." A French official message states: " North of the Somme a lively cannonade occurred in the region of Maurepas. South of the Somme we enlarged our positions south-west of Estrees, taking portions of trenches. Bad weather has hampered operations on most of the front. The artillery duel continues."
