AUSTRALIAN WAR ITEMS.

LAND FOR SOLDIERS.

SUM NEEDED £5,000,000.

A. and N.Z. Cable. MELBOURNE. Aug. 4.

In the course of an appeal for support for the fund for placing returned soldiers on the land, and providing for them in other ways, Mr. G. F. Pearce, Commonwealth Minister for Defence, stated that at least £5,000,000 would be required. He stated that if the attempt to raise that amount by voluntary subscription failed, then it would be inevitable that the amount would have to be raised by taxation.
