NO RESPECTER OF STAFFS.
A cehtaTN general who is very small instating was going to adjudicate' upon some manoeuvres which were being held some distance from headquarters, and being rather pressed for time did not stop to change into uniform but drove to the railway station in mufti, intending to change in* his saloon. The officers forming his staff were awaiting him, and so was the train, but no one seemed to know where the general's reserved accommodation was situated. A guard happened to pass, and the general tapped him smartly with his cane. "I say, guard." lie said, "where am I and my staff to go:'" The guard bated to be tapped, and moreover he did not know the general. "You can go into that compartment there," he said severely, surveying the walking staff, "and as for your blessed staff, as you call it, you can" put it on the hat- rack."
