DR. MAGUIRE'S RETURN.
SERVICE IN EGYPT. WORK AT MILITARY HOSPITALS. A warm welcome was accorded yesterday to Major C. E. Maguire, medical superintendent at the Auckland Hospital, on Ins return to Auckland after nearly a year of activo service in Egypt. Major Maguiie left New Zealand last June as second in command to Colonel Purkcs, with the No. 2 Stationary Hospital, and on arrival in Egypt was appointed to the Egyptian Army Hospital, near CairoShortly before his departure, Major j Maguire was transferred to Moascar, on the Suez Canal, where ho inaugurated a hospital of 400 beds. A high tribute is paid by Major Maguire to the New Zealanders on ser. vice, both as fighters and as patients, and he is warm in his prai;* of tho work done J by New Zealand m.'dical officers and nurses, who have won the highest esteem of all British officials by their faithful and capable service. With regard to the proposals recently made for the establish ment of hospitals outside Egypt for sick and wounded Now Zealanders, Major Maguire expresses the opinion that the suggestion is- a g-jod one, his experience having gone to show that the climate of Egypt was not at all favourable to convalescence. Despite this drawback, however, splendid work had been done at the Egyptian hospitals, the mortality rate amonr, patients being surprisingly low. Major Maguire brings back with him several most interesting souvenirs of his sojourn in Egypt, one being a Persian vase, presented by the hospital staff as a token of their appreciation of his services. Another valued trophy is a set of X-Ray photographs, by which many bullets and fractures were located, and successful operations performed. -The evacuation of Gallipoli having released a large number of medical officers for service in Egypt, Major Maguire obtained permission to return to Auckland, and his experiences in Egvpt will doubtless piove of great benefit to invalided soldiers. Ho will resume control at the i Auckland Hospital on Monday next.
