A deputation from the Onohunga _ Recruiting Committee waited on the Minister for Defence, the Hon. J. illen, upon the latter's arrival at Onehunga from New Plymouth yesterday morning, and presented a report on the progress of recruiting in the borough. The Hon. F. W. Lang, M.P., introduced the deputation, which consisted of the Deputy-Mayor, Mr. C. C. Davis, Mr. H. J. Davies, and the town clerk, Mr. H. A. Yockney. Mr. Davis remarked that the recruiting results achieved in the Onehunga district would compare very favourably with those in any other borough in the Dominion. The wishes of the Government Recruiting Board had been faithfully carried out, and the canvassers had met with scarcely any opposition while carrying out their work. Mr. Davis mentioned that one resident in the borough had five sons at the war. The report showed that the total number of names on the roll supplied by the Recruiting Board was 1087. A further 167 eligible men were discovered to be residing in the borough. On the other hand, it had been found that 215 of those on the roll had left the district. The following additional figures were supplied to the Minister — Number of visits oaid 3000 Cards collected and sent to Defence Office .... 991 Number of men who refused to give information / 30 Number of single men in district ... 256 Number of married men without children ... 114 Married men with one child ... ... 100 Married men with two children 155 Married men with three children ... 90 Married men with four children ... 82 Married men with five children ... 30 Married men with six children 29 Married men with seven children ... 18 Married men with eight children ... 7 Married men with nine children ... 1 Married men with ten children ... ... 1 Mr. Allen said tnat exceedingly pood results had been obtained. He remarked that he would like to publish the figures in order that other districts might see what was being accomplished at Orehunga. The work of the Onehunga Committee was not yet finished, however. He would like it to keep in touch, if possible. with any of the men who night leave the district, and to tret acquainted frith each new arrival, and report periodically to the Defence Department.' If the Government found it necessary to bring in compulsion, this watchfulness on the part of the committee would prevent shirking, so far as Onehunga was concerned. The Minister added that all tho recruiting cards for the Dominion were being recorded at Wellington, and about 9000 cards had been received already,' while they were still coming in at the rate of about 100 a day. The information contained on these cards would greatly assist the Government in the classification that would follow if compulsion were found necessary. Mr. Allen informed the committee that as soon as the information was complete ho hoped to credit every town with its own enlistments. SIXTEENTH REINFORCEMENTS. ARRANGEMENTS FOR CAMP.
