AUTUMN MEETING OPENED. 5 MULLINGAR WINS LEADING > EVENT. i Beautiful weather was experienced yosterf day for tho opening of the Avondalo Jockey j Club's Autumn Meeting, when a. large altondanco was recorded at tho suburban course. Everything passed off most satis--5 factorily, and in the management of the I mooting tho secretary, Mr. H. H. Hayr, . is entitled to a word of warm praise. 3 Quartermastor-Sergoant J. C. Patterson was proscnt in tho capacity of stipendiary r steward, and initiated an inquiry into an ■ incident in connection with the Hack •. Hurdles. As a result of the inquiry T. Mulcahy, rider of Centenary, "as fined £5 , for careless riding, and severely cautioned. The public were very wide of the mark ' in finding winners, not a single first favourite scoring throughout tho afternoon. Tho Chevalier Steeplechase proved a fiasco, the winnor, Captain Jack, being tho only competitor to complete tho course I without mishap, while Spalperion was the , only other candidate to finish. When Dogger Bank collided with a post his rider, Kelly, sustained severe bruises, while the i horso cut himself badly on tho Bhoulder. I Anderton suffered a broken collarbone when , Taihape fell with him. The totalisator returns for tho day wore , £20,148, against £20.806 10s for the corresponding day last autumn meeting—an increase of £5341 10s. The special war tax I on dividends amounted to £588 Bs. After King's Courier had delayed the start some little time, the field was despatched to a fair start, Blue and Black being tie first to show out prominently. Beauty joined Contenary in front passing tho stand, but going down the back the former was done with, leaving Brookfield to follow Centenary into the straight. Round the back Housewife commenced to lose ground, while the six competitors were bunched close together half-a-mile from homo. Onco in the straight Signo and Castalia were going nicely, while Mullingar on tho outside came up with a run and had tho race won inside the distance, eventually winning by two lengths from Castalia, with Signo third three lengths further back.
